There has been rapidly growing interest from the zebra community concerning the overlap between autism and the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS)/hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD). Although COVID19 has put a halt to a lot of clinical research, our group has continued to try to explore this important relationship.
Yesterday, we published our latest article reviewing this fascinating overlap in the Journal of Personalized Medicine, titled, “The Relationship between Autism and Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes/Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders.” It adds to a small but ever-growing literature on this topic.
In it, we talk about co-occurrence of these two conditions, both within individuals and within the same families. We also discuss similarities in genetics and address the ways in which EDS gene networks may overlap autism networks and experience crosstalk. And, finally, we explore symptom overlap between these two spectrum conditions, including sensory issues, epilepsy, sleep disorders, coordination and proprioceptive problems, autonomic disorders, and immune disorders.
